HAMPTONS REVIVED
Newport, Sydney is about as far from the Hamptons as one can imagine, yet inspiration from the summer destination for affluent New York City residents has found its way to these streets, in the transformation of a 1970s home with tired interiors.
The residence is intended to be a holiday house for an Inner Sydney family and the brief was to create a warm place of retreat with breakout areas that allowed for large family gatherings and celebrations.
The major challenge on this project was to retain the bones of the house while tweaking and adding minor alterations and additions to the exterior to meet the brief. Rigorous planning of rooms was critical to both maximise sleeping quarters and create large open plan entertaining spaces all within the existing envelope.
Further, clever planning helped to take advantage of the site’s natural features, with panoramic views from the open living areas out to the South Pacific Ocean and an infinity edge pool designed to sit atop of the site’s cliff face.
The interior styling and design helped to further create a place of retreat, refreshment and relief. The design team created a contemporary twist on the traditional Hamptons styling which gives the space a unique character and personality.
Great Gatsby-style grandeur and country club casual inspired a palette of dusty pinks and jade greens throughout the home. Materials such as rattan timber and carrara marble are complimented with elegant brass fixtures and fluted textures continuing the beach holiday narrative.
The joinery pieces of the TV unit and bar follow the symmetry of the existing roof and celebrate its irregularity. The seamless unit continues to flow through to the kitchen wall tying together both spaces while neatly hiding a powder room behind and creating an impressive frame for the expansive water views.
The end result is a luxurious beach holiday destination that maximises location, the site’s natural features and the existing structure to create an indulgent escape from big city life.
